520 |a Philippine presidential elections held to choose a new CEO every six years are colorful events, with big, entertainment-oriented rallies and many a movie star and political dynast among the leading candidates. The elections themselves are typically followed by charges of vote fraud after a close outcome in a crowded field. But apart from a brief democratic breakdown in 2001, when the military ousted pres Joseph E. Estrada, an actor turned politician who was popular among the poor but hated by elites, Philippine democracy has held up reasonably well. But the surprise victory of Rodrigo "Digong" Duterte in the May 2016 presidential election represents a major rupture in the liberal-democratic regime reestablished thirty years ago after the "people power" revolution against the dictatorship of Ferdinand E. Marcos. With a folksy style and tough-guy image, Duterte promised quickly to halt rising crime, end government corruption, and rebuild the country's crumbling infrastructure.
