|a After reviewing Moscow's failures in East Asia (alienating the PRC and arousing the anxieties and fears of other neighbouring Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea), the essay discusses some aspects of the enduring Soviet behaviour that persistently contributes to failure. Assessing the future prospects of Soviet influence in East Asia, the author ends up by suggesting that in the 1980s and beyond, the rigidities of Soviet policy and Soviet military advances in East Asia are likely to remain.
