|a This article presents current changes and a reorientation in the way history textbooks deal with Russian history as exemplified in three textbooks on pre-revolutionary Russian history. It emerges that, in addition to the traditional views adopted from the Communist era and now simply adapted to include an improved image of the Church, there are also increased efforts to place the State at the focus of historical developments. Moreover, there are eclectic, and as yet somewhat adventurous, interpretations of Russian history to be found in school textbooks in which a rejection of the rich and powerful is mingled with a yearning for an imperialist past. Basically, a new mythology of school historiography is unfolding before our very eyes; one which is targeted at winning over young readers.
