|a The paper attempts to focus primarily on the origins and development of South Korea's Nordpolitik (Northward policy), by which the country is in pursuit of a promising international environment. Since the Nordpolitik can be traced back to the Park Chung Hee era of the 1970s, when he coped with the atmosphere of the first post-war detente in Northeast Asia, the paper looks chronologically through Park Chung Hee's Fourth Republic and Chun Doo Hwan's Fifth Republic for a historical background, and, finally, to Roh Tae-woo's Sixth Republic. It discusses their domestic politics as well as their searching for better relations with socialist countries. (DÜI-Sen)
